Formula Used in This Calculator

This calculator uses the designer rule of a floor border on every side of the rug: Border = 12 to 18 inches on each side Ideal rug width = Room width - (2 x Border) Ideal rug length = Room length - (2 x Border) Final rug size = the standard size closest to the ideal size Standard sizes used: 5 x 8, 6 x 9, 8 x 10, 8 x 11, 9 x 12, 10 x 14 and 12 x 15 ft. For dining rooms, the calculator keeps extra room so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. For bedrooms, it keeps a soft landing zone on both sides of the bed.

Rug Size Chart (Quick Guide)

Room size Best rug size Works for
7 x 10 ft 5 x 8 ft Small living rooms, studios
10 x 12 ft 8 x 10 ft Most living rooms and bedrooms
12 x 15 ft 9 x 12 ft Large living rooms, open plans
14 x 18 ft 10 x 14 ft XL rooms, dining for 8+

3 Rules Designers Always Follow

  • Leave a border: keep 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the walls.
  • Front legs on: in the living room, at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs should sit on the rug.
  • Go one size up: if you are between two sizes, the bigger rug almost always looks better.
