This calculator uses the same clearance rules designers use for apartments:

3 Furniture Rules That Save Every Apartment
- Measure doors and halls first: a piece that fits the room but not the 30 inch doorway helps no one.
- Keep the 18 inch gap: leave 18 inches between the sofa and the coffee table, close enough to reach, wide enough to walk.
- Scale to the short wall: the biggest piece in the room should follow the shortest wall, never fight it.

How much space does a dining table need around it?Keep 36 inches between the table edge and the wall on every side, so chairs pull out and people can walk behind them.
What size TV suits a small living room?Measure from the sofa to the TV wall in inches and divide by 1.7. Eight feet of viewing distance gives a 55 inch TV.
