How It Works

Step 1: Measure your windowMeasure the window width, then the distance from your curtain rod down to the sill and down to the floor.
Step 2: Pick your styleChoose sill, apron, floor or puddle length, and how full you want the folds to look.
Step 3: Get your curtain sizeThe calculator shows the exact panel size to buy, plus the closest standard store size.

Formula Used in This Calculator

This calculator uses the standard curtain rules designers follow: Floor length = Rod to floor distance - 1 inch Sill length = Rod to sill distance + 1 inch Total curtain width = Window width x Fullness (1.5 to 2.5) Panel width = Total curtain width / 2 panels Standard store lengths used: 54, 63, 72, 84, 96, 108 and 120 inches. The calculator always rounds you to the closest standard length at or above your exact size, so your curtains never fall short.

3 Curtain Rules Designers Always Follow

  • Hang high: mount the rod 4 to 6 inches above the frame to make the room feel taller.
  • Hang wide: let the rod extend 4 to 6 inches past each side so open curtains clear the glass.
  • Kiss the floor: floor length curtains look best ending half an inch above the floor.

Curtain Length Calculator FAQs

1. What is the standard curtain length?

84 inches is the most common store length. It suits a rod mounted about 84 inches from the floor, the standard in most apartments.

2. How wide should curtains be for a 48 inch window?

About 96 inches in total for a full look, so two panels of roughly 48 inches each.

3. Should curtains touch the floor?

Floor length curtains should just kiss the floor or sit half an inch above it. Puddle length is a style choice for formal rooms.

4. What does fullness mean?

Fullness is how much fabric gathers across your window. 2x fullness means curtain width is twice the window width, giving rich, even folds.
