How It Works
Formula Used in This Calculator
Border = 12 to 18 inches on each side Ideal rug width = Room width - (2 x Border) Ideal rug length = Room length - (2 x Border) Final rug size = the standard size closest to the ideal size Standard sizes used: 5 x 8, 6 x 9, 8 x 10, 8 x 11, 9 x 12, 10 x 14 and 12 x 15 ft. For dining rooms, the calculator keeps extra room so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. For bedrooms, it keeps a soft landing zone on both sides of the bed.Related Tools

3 Rules Designers Always Follow
- Leave a border: keep 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the walls.
- Front legs on: in the living room, at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs should sit on the rug.
- Go one size up: if you are between two sizes, the bigger rug almost always looks better.
